Revisiting AI Project Cycle and Ethical Frameworks for AI

Every AI project follows six stages, from understanding the problem to putting the solution to use. The cycle repeats: what we learn after deployment feeds back into the next round.

AI is grouped into three domains by the kind of data it works with: Statistical Data (numbers and tables), Computer Vision (images and video) and Natural Language Processing (text and speech).

A framework is a set of steps that helps us solve a problem. An ethical framework helps us make choices that do not cause unintended harm. AI decides at huge scale, so its hidden biases can hurt many people at once.

Ethical frameworks are of two kinds. Sector-based frameworks are made for one field, like bioethics for healthcare. Value-based frameworks focus on a core value: rights, utility (the greatest good) or virtue (good character).

Bioethics is a sector-based framework for healthcare and life sciences. It rests on four principles: respect for autonomy, do not harm, ensure maximum benefit for all and justice.
